Motivation’s overrated.Set yourself up instead.
You don't need more motivation. You need a better environment that helps your goals come to fruition.
Many people think that discipline is what you need to be consistent. So many of them keep telling themselves that they just have to "try harder next time".
But motivation fades. Environment is long-lasting.
- If your counter is full of brain-gasm inducing snacks, you will eat them instead of cooking dinner.
- If your gym bag is packed and in your car, you'll train
- If your water bottle is FULL on your desk, you will drink more water.
-If your shoes are by the door, you’ll walk.
You don't rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your setup.
Your surroundings make most of your decisions for you. The trick isn't to be more disciplined. It's to make good choices easier and negative choices harder.
Here's how to start:
- keep high protein/high fibre/ high micronutrient value snacks where you can see them (I have been getting into the habit of always keeping fruit around for my afternoon snack, and I will also eat a high-fat sugary treat because I have a sweet tooth)
- prep your gym clothes before bedtime (I used to do this with my school uniform when I was a kid, because it was one of the main reasons I would run late if I didn't do that)
- leave a full water bottle beside your phone charger
You are not lazy. You are responding to what is around you.
Discipline is just good design repeated daily.
Be an engineer in the way you design your life.
Set your environment up to support your goals. You'll start winning without trying harder.
